Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), a Nongovernmental Organization, was founded in 1985 by Mr. M. Abdus Salam, the Chief Executive of the organization. GUK was Gaibandha, a district under the Rangpur Division, based Nongovernment Organization. Presently, its working areas broaden to more than twelve districts under the Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Chattogram divisions of Bangladesh. The organization is also working in the Rohingya Refugee camps in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar. Gana Unnayan Kendra obtained registration, to promotes its activities, from different bodies of Bangladesh Government such as - Department of Social Services, NGO Affairs Bureau, Microcredit Regulatory Authority, and Bangladesh Election Commission (EC).

Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) undertakes various projects, programs and social activists regarding food security & livelihood, capacity building, women empowerment, health & nutrition, human rights, financial inclusion, good governance, education, disaster management & climate change, skills development & job placement of youths, etc. In 2010, the organization established skill development training centre, targeting to create skilled human resources, where different types of courses are run such as mobile phone servicing, garments sewing machine operation, IT support service course, electrical installation & maintenance, and more.

Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) established GUK Institute of Engineering & Technology (GUKIET), a Bangladesh Technical Education Board approved technical institute, where, along with different short courses, 4-year Diploma courses in Civil and Electrical Engineering are run.

GUK has affiliation with a number of national international organizations including UNFCCC, UNCCD, World Forum, SANGAT, and more. The organization's donors are - Ministry of Primary & Mass Education of Government of Bangladesh, Ministry of Women & Children Affairs of Government of Bangladesh, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), marico, unicef, UNFPA, Sweden Sverige, UNDP, OXFAM, NETZ Bangladesh, german cooperation, and more.
